Day Programs

BSRS Bowling

The Centre-based day respite program, operates Monday through Friday from 10:00am to 3:00pm and provides the opportunity for people who have been classified with any type of dementia or older people with compromised abilities, to have a social day in a safe environment, while their carer has a break from their daily caring role.

Transport is available within the Byron Shire if required by either bus or car to enable people to get to and from the centre and regularly partake in social, creative, physical and cognitive enhancing activities.

People who enjoy art and others who may never have drawn or painted before enjoy creating. Art therapy is known to emphasise abilities that are available and can be developed, rather than looking for those that have been lost. It focuses on untapped areas of the brain to help to improve concentration and has a calming effect on people with Dementia whilst listening to music. Similar to the effects of music or playing with pets, creative activities promote relaxation, improve mood and decrease challenging behaviours.

Studies show that art therapy can enhance communication, brain function and social interaction for people with dementia. In fact, visual art can trigger dormant memories and emotions, inspiring conversations among these people who may at times struggle to express themselves.  When they create the art themselves, that activity stimulates the whole brain. Instead of just responding to images, they must plan, remember, create patterns and use motor skills… it’s a way for them to express what they are thinking and feeling.

Other activities include (but are not limited to) carpet bowls, cards, scrabble, gardening, walking, gentle exercise, manicures, singing, dancing, chair zumba, reminisence, bingo, art & crafts, men's social groups, knitting, visiting musicans & word games.

Lunch, morning and afternoon tea are provided.

The cost for the day is $20 and can be negotiated if necessary.

Client referral requests to the service can be made via a variety of sources, and an assessment of the care goals for people will be completed following the referral request.
